With Gadget-Tracks system your stolen gadgets phone home.

The system is very simple, the gadget has a small program which calls Gadget-Tracks server when activated. When your gadget is stolen you log into Gadget-Tracks website and report it stolen. After that all you have to do is wait, and if the theif plug in your gadget, and without knowing it, activates the program, you will recieve an email containing things like internal and external IP address of the theif.

I tried it, and it worked like a charm. I added my ipod to my profile, dropped the files on to it, and reported it stolen. Within second after clicking its icon in explorer I had an email with my IP address, and other details. It did not even trigger my Zone Alarm firewall. Very impressive!

However you need a bit of luck for it to work. The theif needs to activate it on a windows pc with a internet connection. This also means, that if this is succesfull, the people who steal gadgets might be prepared. Anyhow I really like this system even if it is not fool proof - it improves the odds.

Now I just need something like this for my laptop to make it phone home, maybe I could just make it execute the program when initiating windows.

I’ve had the joy of trying Joost out the last couple of weeks.

Joost is the new project frem The Skype guys and the talk of town right now. This time they provide all-legal free TV. The experience where mostly impressive. It takes a few seconds to understand the logic behind the program. On my 4 mbit connection playback was smooth and the quality was great but they say it should work on a 1 Mbit connection.

The only flaws I’ve found so far is that it is not open to all, and that the content they provide is a bit limited, even though I’ve spent hours enjoying Indie-films, World-Poker Tour and National Geographic documentaries.

It seems that they are inspired by Google in their approach to PR. As Google did with Gmail you need to be invited by another user in order to gain access (If anyone wants an invite make a comment, and I’ll send you one if I, at some point get more invites than I can use). To me this seems like a great way to make a hype.

As with Skype the grand idea is to base it all on peer-to-peer, the concept behind most file-sharing applications. The advantage of the concept is that all users serve each instead of all being served by a central server.

I recently needed to do some interviews on the phone. I found out that using Skype-out with a skype recording software was a great solution for that. I used the free tool Free MX Skype Recorder - it works absolutely great on windows. All I needed to do was install the software, and run before Skype, and then all my calls where automaticly recorded and converted to mp3. Very nice indeed.

Setting up Google docs to publish to my blog is pretty easy (here is a nice guide with screen shots).

Name
I’ve named document “Using Google Docs to publish to wordpress” in the hope that this will be the name of the post.

Categories
I’ve tagged the document with the tags “Blogging” and “Google Docs”.

Pics
Here I’ve put in a picture in order to test if that works (I could probably read this somewhere but I’m lazy)

General usage
Pros
-The editor has a bigger window, this makes it more comfortable especially with long posts
- A nice intuitive editor. I find it much better than the one in Wordpress
- Spell check (also possible in Wordpress admin)
- Integrated in Google Dics which I use for many other things.
- Fast editor (I use it any way for drafts)

Cons
- No access to the more advanced features in Wordpress like tags and time.

———Update af publishing——————

- I’ve had to ad title and categories manually

Competition seems to be increasing within the field of email application for java compatible cell phones. A few weeks ago Google launched their a java application for accessing gmail. Almost at the same time Movamail has launched their paid service movamail 2.0.

Both of the application boasts a lot of features, Google’s client offers the possibility to read attachments from the phone, and movamail makes it possible to attach pictures from the phones camera to the email.

I tried installing both on my aging Nokia 6610i, but none of them would install when accessing the website from the phone. Google stated clearly that the java client did not support, and with movamail I got an error on the phone when trying.

Luckily for people like me the also both support web access. I have not tried Movamails, but I’ve used Googles for a couple of month now with the Opera browser installed on the cell phone.

From my point view, Google entering the market makes it tough for Movamail. I will continue to forward my regular to my gmail account and use Gmails mobile browser access m.gmail.com to access the email because it works very well and it is free.

It looks like the anonymity of comment section has been misused.

Some time ago Tech Tag received two very critical comments on two posts about Scheduleworld (post 1, post2). Then a few weeks later the pattern repeated it self. Two identical comments where posted on the same two post, but from a different IP.

Comment 1
Claims to be from a someone whose Scheduleworld account has been compromised, and that his comments asking about it in the Scheduleworld support forum has been deleted.

Comment 2
Claims that critical questions in the Scheduleworld forum has been deleted, and has led to the account being deleted.

To get an idea of what is going on I wrote a a mail to Scheduleworlds support, and confronted them with the the allegations from the comment section. Within 30 minutes I received an email answering all my questions.
The answer from Scheduleworld.
I got the answer from Scheduleworld that messages had been deleted from the forum.

“I have only deleted comments from one person - the same user that posted these comments to your site (I believe they are the same person).”
The email stated.
On the other hand Scheduleworld denies deleting any accounts.

“I have never deleted an account unless the person asks me to. I haven’t even deleted the accounts this poster used to fabricate complaints with.Scheduleworld finds it a very theoretical that someone should have compromised accounts.

There are a number of things that could explain this complaint besides the poster being a competitor. I don’t believe it, but perhaps the poster actually is a victim and someone else sniffed his HTTP traffic. Perhaps someone else retrieved his information by tapping his keyboard, or a virus snooped his keystrokes or network traffic.”

No answer from the other side
I then sent an email to the addresses used for the different comments. One of them bounced, and I’ve received no answer to the other message. Adding to that both email addresses used for commenting, where supplied by spam services which offer free use-and-dispose email addresses.

The comments are mutually excluding, meaning that that if they are true it must be two different persons, and they are from different IP addresses. But they share some similarities. They are are almost identical two and two, made at the same time and made in the same tone.

Comments based on a lie?
Based on the lacking answer and the extra means taken to stay anonymous. I see no other conclusion, than to conclude that these comments were most likely based on a lies. But if someone think something else, please let me know.
Whether this is a lie or not, the fact that there is an insecurity about commets is a problem to the whole blogosphere. It reduces the value of actual comments and risks making the blogossphere seem amateurish to outsiders.

Danish courts ruled last Wednesday, that the Internet provider Tele2 are to shut off their clients access to the controversial Russian music site allofmp3.com. That I find really disturbing, that the danish Internet access is starting to look like the situation in China.

In a matter of hours a guide on how to get pass the block was published. This guide claims that the block is a simple dns-block, meaning that access is only prevented if the users use Tele2’s own dns server. With this knowledge the average user should be able to get passed the block in five minutes.

What really bothers me, is that they use such an extreme means for such a complicated case. The whole allofmp3.com discussion is a complicated matter which lately has gotten political. These extreme means should only be used in extreme cases. Another point is that these extreme means lose their value when used in cases such as these, more people will know how to avoid getting blocked.

Last but not least - as the case with China shows - it is extremely hard to control the internet. It will be very hard for the danish Internet providers to block people using proxy servers, tor and so on. In my mind it is just a waste of time.

I thought the online office suite would fail without doubt, but after trying out Google’s new spreadsheet and docs service , I’m actually in doubt.

I like owning things, and I distrust things that are free. That is why I thought Googles new online spreadsheet and word processing applications called Google docs was a bad idea. However, I decided to try it out after listening to the podcast Gillmor Gang.

First impression - there is something missing

The first thing I noticed about Google Docs, is what it is lacking compared to a standard office suite. It had the basic stuff, but a lot of the more advanced functions i missing.

Second Impression - I can’t live without it

After using it a couple of days, I realize that I’ve grown quit addicted to a couple of function.

The collaboration possibilities are absolutely amazing. Within a few clicks you can invite someone to view or collaborate on the document. It is a lot easier than saving it, emailing it and waiting for the response. It is actually possible to be two (or more) persons working on the same document at the same time, or several persons can share a document.
I think this function actually makes it possible to compete word since you don’t have to export it out, you can just invite people in, all they need is a computer with internet connection.
It works on almost all platforms. I often use several different PCs during the day, running XP or Linux. When doing that it is just a thrill to have a system running on all platforms (without installation).

The third thing which has gotten me hooked is the document handling. It is very handy that they are all in the system - No matter from where I connect. I don’t have to waste my time exporting things and saving it on different media and transferring it. Another
advantage is, that if the laptop i stolen, no documents is on it.

And the winner is…

All in all I’m a lot more fund of Google Docs now than before I used it. Most of the time I don’t miss the advanced functions - because I was not going to use them for the document. And I have become really fund of the new functions Google docs has. But a lot of it comes down how much one trusts the service provider - Google.
Comparison

Advantages of Google’s service:

Free - as in beer

Platform independent: Requires a browser and a connection

According to newspapers in Denmark, an 11 year old girl has been sued by the heirs of Marlene Dietrich, for bying the domain: www.marlene.eu.

A few days ago danish newspaper Politiken reported of an 11 year girl named Marlene, who has been contacted by the heirs of Marlene Dietrich.

According to the newspaper, the heir’s of the German actress claim, that they have the rights to the name Marlene. They are demanding that she hand over her domain www.marlene.eu and pay 50,000$ to compensate for the loss that she has inflicted on their business.

The girl and her family has nothing to fear according to a lawyer specialized in domains. The lawyer, Mikkel Gudsoe, tells the newspaper that you are allowed to use your own name, as long as it is not done in order to create confusion.

From my point of view, the logic must, that the girls “stealing” the traffic intended for the official Marlene Dietrich web site. That logic has a flaw, that the .eu domains are very new, and not getting a lot of traffic. This is indicated by the sponsored counter on the girls web site, according to this she did not have any visitors at all last week until saturday when the story was picked up by the newspaper.
It seems to me that the heirs, or their lawyers, are trying to avoid having to pay for the domain by scaring of the girl and her family.
